Our Volunteer Program

The Halls Gap Zoo Volunteer Program provides the perfect opportunity for those looking to gain valuable hands-on experience in animal care, develop new skills, or who simply enjoy spending time outdoors surrounded by wildlife. Volunteering is a great way to connect with animals, people and nature while giving back to the local community. As a Volunteer, you will be working alongside our hard-working and supportive Keeper team to care for the animals in all aspects of their daily husbandry, while expanding your knowledge base and developing your professional and personal skills. Volunteers are a vital part of the Halls Gap Zoo team, and we welcome their involvement and enthusiasm!

Duties you may be undertaking:

  • Enclosure maintenance (sweeping, scrubbing, raking, window cleaning, poop pick up)
  • Preparing and delivering animal diets; this may include handling meat products and live insects
  • Making enrichment for a range of species
  • Ensuring our guests feel welcome
  • Grounds maintenance – assisting with gardening, weeding and pest control
  • Assisting keepers on daily animal rounds with an array of zookeeper tasks!

Eligibility

All applicants for the volunteer program must:

  • Be 18 years or older (with parental/guardian consent required for under 18s)
  • Be physically fit and able to perform required duties, which includes at a minimum:
    • being able to lift at least 20kg;
    • being able to comfortably squat and return to a standing position
  • Commit to a regular weekly, fortnightly or monthly shift for a minimum-period of six months (the first three-months of which will be a probation period)
  • Shift times are 8am – 4pm
  • Pass a Police Clearance (if requested)
  • Pass a Working with Children Check (and provide a copy)
  • Maintain a tidy and practical dress code
  • Follow Halls Gap Zoo’s policies and procedures
